Presenters: Eva Thanheiser & Naomi Jessup

In this TODOS webinar, we share ways of using Knotting Numbers which introduces Marcia Asher and Ethnomatheamtics in 3-5 classrooms and in teacher education to create a sense of belonging in the mathematics spaces and broaden students' view of (a) who can do mathematics and (b) what it means to do mathematics.

We will share excerpts of the book and how we have used them to engage students.

Dr. Eva Thanheiser is an award-winning mathematics educator who is currently working on three NSF funded grants. Her expertise focuses on anti-bias mathematics education at the K-12 and College levels. She examines what mathematics instruction could look like when it is designed to allow all learners to engage. She also examines how a focus on community and belonging can change participation structures and engagement in the mathematics classroom. Thanheiser is also a co-author on two book series, one focused on Teaching Math for Social Justice at the Middle School level and the other focused on Powerful Mathematicians at the K-5 level.

Dr. Naomi Jessup is a mathematics teacher educator with over 20 years of experience working alongside teachers, students, families, and communities. Jessup is passionate about making mathematical connections and rehumanizing mathematics spaces and experiences. Her expertise focuses on rehumanizing mathematics teaching practices and ways to honor students’ mathematical brilliance at the K-5 and College levels, in addition to parental partnerships. This work is currently supported by two NSF funded grants.
