Using Math to Identify and Impact Social Justice Issues in Our Lives (Online Facilitated)

This free workshop is being offered by the SABES Mathematics and Adult Numeracy Curriculum and Instruction PD Center

Overview: Math can be a powerful tool for identifying and disrupting the effects of racism. Developing strong skills in proportional reasoning and statistical literacy and carrying this reasoning into the world, prepares students to recognize the effects of racism and to critically question and respond to real world issues.

Audience: This professional development activity/course is designed for all adult education math practitioners and HSE/ABE generalists who teach math

Description: In this workshop, we will explore how to teach math that students can use to think critically about the world. We’ll use materials from The Change Agent, a resource that is free to Massachusetts teachers. It provides examples of how to prepare students to recognize injustice through proportional reasoning and statistical literacy.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

• Find effective and engaging social justice resources that fit in your math class
• Use proportional reasoning to think critically about data
• Use understandings about proportionate and disproportionate relationships to identify injustice
• Empower students to use their reasoning and their voices to disrupt the effects of racism
• Expand the Notice & Wonder instructional routine to help students see themselves in the math
